DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY - ‘Pathway’

Exhibited on ‘Beyond the Frame’ at Harrow Campus, Ground Floor, University of Westminster

January 2024 - XIANGYANG HE

The compelling collection ‘Pathway’ tells a story of “Two different chairs, two different lives“. It explores the everyday existential quests of individuals through his personification of “chairs”, casting these ordinary object as a protagonist in the narrative of modern solitude. Jerry vividly unravels the fabric of modern solitude, laying bare the inherent loneliness faced by individuals in modern society.

Jerry sees himself as an “idealist” which seeks to utilize this series to forge a connection with viewers, prompting a communal epiphany about personal journeys in self-identification amidst societal pressures. His intent is to offer a mirror, reflecting a shared emotional landscape that reassures the audience of their not being solitary in their experiences.

The artwork serves as a delicate balance between societal expectations and personal ideals, effectively inviting viewers to reflect on their own positions within these dynamics. Jerry’s approach not only enhances the relatability of the theme but also enriches the discourse on self-discovery and individualism within a collective framework.

‘FEET ON THE SHOES, SHOES ON THE FEET’

Published in the 2023 SS BA Photography Magazine ‘TABULA RASA’, University of Westminster

In his evocative series ‘Feet on the Shoes, Shoes on the Feet’, Jerry explores the intricate dance between mobility and identity through the ubiquitous yet often overlooked medium of shoes.

Capturing the silent stories told by the shoes people wear, his work highlights how footwear both anchors us to the ground and maps our personal journeys. Employing a distinct documentary style, Jerry focuses on the uncelebrated details of everyday life, encouraging a deeper reflection on the paths we choose and the footprints we leave behind.

creativity & workflows…

Jerry approaches fashion photography with a balance of openness and precision. He is good at trying new ideas, referencing retro and various styles, and staying responsive to the energy of the set and the people he works with.  He enjoys absorbing the thoughts from the teams, to shape a clear or dreamy visual story. Especially he is careful with lighting and keeps the work natural and honest, without excessive retouching.

He often develops a clear visual direction and emotions before the shoot, then adapts quickly on the day. He prefers images that feel natural, intentional, and human.
